When to replace your boiler

Winter is coming… settle in for the long haul

It’s not always easy to know when your boiler might need replacing, especially if you’re not sure how many years ago it was installed before you moved into your property.

With autumn and winter just around the corner it’s important to know that you’re not going to suffer from a cold spell when your boiler gives up the ghost. It’s especially necessary if you have little ones or elderly relatives in the house as the cold can be particularly dangerous for their health.

We’ve broken down the top ways to notice if you require a boiler change…

How high are your bills?

Boilers that were installed even as recently as 10 years ago can be much less efficient than modern day boilers, so if you notice your bills creeping up it’s probably a sign you should get a quote for a replacement boiler. There are many boiler models that heat homes quickly and precisely, with minimal fuel wastage, so you’ll be saving money in the long run.

How old is your existing one?

As a general rule, boilers will last up to around 15 years old, but that doesn’t mean yours won’t need replacing sooner! It all depends on the model and how hard it’s having to work to heat up your building. Ask your plumber to check it out during your next service.

Better for the environment?

New boilers are eco-friendly. We recommend getting one with a smart thermostat which will make sure it only heats your home as much as necessary rather than coming on and staying on. It’s also a good idea to consider alternative methods such as underfloor heating, as these can run off your existing heating system, run more efficiently so that the entire room is heated and be safer than radiators.

Unusual noises coming from your boiler?

If your boiler is emitting some strange sounds or is not heating your house properly, it’s a sign something probably isn’t quite right. Call a plumber round to take a look at it in more detail. They will be able to advise you on the best course of action, whether that’s a simple repair or if you actually need to get the whole thing replaced.
